How To Improve Curb Appeal With Landscaping

Christen Barber June 22, 2016

There are many ways to improve the first impression of your home, also known as curb appeal - how your home looks when someone pulls up front for the first time. The appearance from the curb has to be both beautiful and inviting. That’s where we come in, as we know how to improve curb appeal with landscaping to ensure your home has the best curb appeal in the neighborhood. So, we’ve pulled together a helpful list of items that can be done with landscaping to give the maximum curb appeal to your home.

Upgrade Your Walkways and Driveways

One of the most important aspects of a home’s curb appeal is the driveway and walkway leading to the front door. Brick pavers are an excellent option to upgrade your current paths and driveway to add a big wow-factor to your home. Pavers come in a variety of shapes, colors and styles to suit your home’s aesthetic. In addition, walkways and driveways can be installed with many different patterns to add additional visual appeal. And, beyond the visual appeal a new walkway and driveway can add, it will also increase the resale value of your home due to the investment in higher quality materials. Not ready to make a big investment to install a new walkway and driveway? Pavers can also be used as a border to your existing walkway or as a short retaining wall to define plant beds at the front of your home.

Give Your Yard The Gift of A Green Lawn

There is nothing more welcoming to create curb appeal than a beautiful, lush, green lawn that is well maintained with regular mowing and edging. If your lawn isn’t as green as you’d like, there are things you can do to improve it. First, start with fertilizing and pest control to ensure your grass is healthy. However, if your lawn is looking a bit sick, you can choose to reseed your lawn or add sod. Sod creates an “instant lawn” that is beautiful and green if installed and cared for correctly.

Add Color with Flowers

The incorporation of flowers will increase the curb appeal of your home instantly by adding lots of vibrant color. We suggest planting both perennials and annuals, as your perennials will continue to bloom each year, but your annuals will only last for a single season. Be sure to balance the types of perennials being mindful of colors to ensure that they will compliment each other as well as the color and style of your home. Annuals are perfect for adding an additional pop of color for a single season.

Don’t Forget the Porch

If you have a front porch, don’t forget to add pots or hanging baskets with plants or flowers to add additional accessories to make your porch attractive and inviting. Speaking of inviting, although not directly related to landscaping, adding a sitting area or a porch swing will create a place that is cozy and homey.

Pool Landscaping Ideas for Your Home

Christen Barber May 25, 2016

Swimming pools are a lot of fun, add life to your yard and landscaping, and also provide additional value to your home. They also provide hours of fun and enjoyment to owners.

Here are a few pool landscaping ideas that can help you integrate your pool into the surrounding landscape to create a beautiful outdoor oasis for you and your family to enjoy season after season.

Beautiful Paths and Walkways

You can add appeal to your swimming pool by adding intricate paths or walkways from the different areas of your house to the pool and throughout your yard. These paths could be made up of colorful stepping stones which are smooth and specially made to be cooler in order to avoid burning your feet during hot days, or with pavers that add color and design to your yard.

Add Additional Features

Making your swimming pool the centerpiece of your overall landscape design in your backyard gives you many options to consider in addition to landscaping ideas. Beginning with the swimming pool, you can then consider other components of your yard by adding a pool deck or patio, outdoor kitchen, or fire pit that will add to the overall ambiance of your yard. Plus, with the addition of these additional features, your home will soon become a gathering place for family and friends to enjoy from BBQs to outdoor dinner parties to quiet nights by the fire.

Choose The Right Plants and Flowers

Adding the right plants and flowers around your pool is key to incorporate your pool into the overall design of your home and existing landscaping, unless you want to start the entire thing from scratch. However, there are things that you should consider in selecting plants or they will only prove nuisance to your pool. For instance, choose the trees or shrubs that will not hang over the water because they will drop leaves or flowers into the pool and cause additional work and potentially clog the skimmer. It is best if you choose plants that promote privacy by creating hedges, because they can block the eyes of passersby or nosy neighbors.

Aside from all pool landscaping ideas above, there are many additional ways to make your pool and yard a calming oasis and the most enjoyable part of your home. Investing in landscaping that adds color, beauty and privacy to your yard will only continue to add value over time.

At Barber’s, we have over 40 years of landscaping experience, and we’re certain that we can create a beautiful backyard oasis centered around your pool with the right combination of privacy and beauty. Contact us today or give us a call at 609.861.5050 for a free in-home estimate.
